CHICOPEE ANNOUNCES CAMERA LIVESTREAMS OF THE UNIROYAL MIDDLE TIER DEMOLITION PROJECT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CHICOPEE – Through its Departments of Planning & Development and Municipal Information Systems (MIS), the City of Chicopee has completed the installation of four live stream cameras at the former Uniroyal property. Cameras are recording and live streaming the ongoing abatement and demolition projects of the five middle tier buildings (28 North, 28 South, 28 North Extension, 28 Addition, and 28 East). The live stream project is supported in part by three U.S. EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grants awarded to the City to address hazardous building materials abatement.

The Uniroyal demolition efforts began in 2010 and are currently in the fourth demolition phase. Previous phases of demolition focused primarily on former Uniroyal buildings closest to the Chicopee River, largely out of view from the remainder of the neighborhood. As stated by Lee Pouliot, Director of Planning & Development, “The live stream cameras at the Uniroyal property allow the City to provide visual access to the ongoing abatement and demolition project without requiring any physical access to the property. The cameras will operate during all hours and the live stream will be available on YouTube for those interested in following the project’s progress.”

“This is a unique opportunity to allow Chicopee residents the ability to follow progress on this significant Uniroyal cleanup project,” stated Mayor Richard J. Kos. “The City recognizes that previous phases of demolition have been difficult to follow because of the Site’s orientation to the Chicopee River - with these cameras in place, the City now has the ability to better communicate and document the progress over time and the significant efforts such demolition projects require,” Kos continued.
